Jaroslav’s Pandemonious Pan Am Preview!

A Pan Am Pandemic is sweeping the Western Hemisphere to which I can offer no resistance!

The Pan Am Games have actually been going on for a short while now. Here’s the official website with all the stuff you’d expect to find on it. The Pan Am Games are different then the Pan Am Championships. “Games” means all the Olympic sports at once and happen the year before the Olympics. The Championships are just for each sport. I guess the Euro Games operate under the same premise?

I honestly had no idea this was the deal but here we are, with a super nice ALL OF THE AMERICAS wrestling tournament, starting tomorrow, and all of it streamed on the ever reliable Watch ESPN app/website. Score.

Only Olympic weights being contested for the men, 6 and 6 free and greco. Just 4 weights for the women. Cause ??? Four whole weights are completed each day for the next four days. 16 MEDALS DE ORO POR TODAS LAS AMERICAS (mi espanol esta muy awesome). The first four greco dudes have already weighed-in but no brackets have posted yet (big blunder Pan Am Games).

But I’m not even going to do a real preview anyway. America and Cuba will dominate. Canada will come in third and there will be a smattering of South, Central and Caribbean nations winning the remaining medals. In fact, that’s usually how it goes for just about every sport.

And just how much do Cuba and the Mericans dominate at rasslin? Let’s rattle off some random wrestling stats I just looked up! Yeah sure, who’s going to stop me?

I just looked at freestyle from the last 5 Games. So 20 years and 39 weight classes.

  • Not once did both USA and Cuba fail to medal
  • in 1995, the US won 7 of 10 golds; in 2007 Cuba won 5 of 7 golds
  • Only 4 times did neither Cuba nor USA win gold (58kg Sissaouri CAN 1999; 84kg Banihashemi CAN 2007; 55kg Beltre DOM 2011; 60kg Gomez PUR 2011)
  • The USA failed to medal once (55kg 2011); Cuba failed to medal twice (60kg and 96kg both 2011)
  • The USA had no entrant at 55kg in 2011 and Cuba no entrant at 60kg in 2011 (no idea what that was about)
  • USA total medal count: 22 Gold; 8 Silver; 9 Bronze
  • Cuba total medal count: 13 Gold; 11 Silver; 13 Bronze

The USA is sending 4 of their 6 World team members. Escobedo for Ramos, Metcalf, Burroughs, Herbert, Snyder and Rey for Dlagnev. Cuba is sending their varsity squad as well.
